About the Initiative

  • 700,000 grants of up to $5000 to help homeowners install a solar energy system onto their home.
  • EnerGuide evaluations of up to $600 for expert advice to homeowners so they can begin to plan their solar energy system installation.
  • You must complete a pre and post retrofit EnerGuide evaluation (residents of Quebec and Nova Scotia need to apply directly through their provincial programs to book their EnerGuide evaluation).
  • Install a solar energy system onto your home that is recommended by your energy advisor in their report.
  • Provide and keep all copies of your documents until March 31, 2028.
  • Homeowners in Canada regardless of where they live can participate.  All you have to do is provide proof of ownership and demonstrate that the home is your primary residence.
  • Indigenous governments or organizations (e.g., band councils, land claim organizations).  These applicants may be eligible to regsiter multiple homes, including homes that are not the owner’s primary residence.  The registered home must be owned by the applicant and be occupied by an Indigenous household.
  • Single and semi-detached houses
  • Row housing
  • Townhomes
  • All-season cottages
  • Mobile homes on a permanent foundation
  • Permanently moored floating homes
  • Mixed use buildings (residential portion only)
  • Small multi-unit residential buildings (three storeys or less with a footprint of 600m2 or less
  • Up to $5000 total for the implementation of eligible solar energy systems installed after December 1, 2020.
  • Up to $600 for the cost of your pre and post retrofit EnerGuide evaluations.  You will not be reimbursed for the pre-retrofit evaluation unless you continue through the full Greener Homes Grant process.
  • Unfortunately, new homes are not eligible for the grant.  Newly built homes are defined as homes that are six months old or less, based on the date of occupancy by the first homeowner.  This will apply to homeowners at the time of application.

For Homeowners

  • You can be reimbursed up to $5000 for installing solar panels on your home.  The system must be at least 1.0kW of peak power capacity or higher to participate.  In other words, for every 1.0kW of solar panels installed you would receive $1000, up to a maximum of $5000 – or 5.0kW worth of solar panels.  Solar panels range in power output so the quantity of them installed on your home will be different for everyone.
  • To apply for reimbursment, you need to complete the entire retrofit journey.  Follow the step-by step process online to register for the initiative and book your pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation here: Greener Homes Registration / Login
  • When you register for the initiative, you wil search using your postal code and select a service organization in your area to complete the home evaluation service.  The energy advisor can use the calculation tools provided by greenerhomes.solar to generate a full solar analysis for your home.
  • An energy advisor will audit your homes energy usage.  Once the analysis is complete, the advisor will be able to appropriately size a solar energy system for your home.  They will use information such as monthly electricity bills to help determine the correct size, which will help mitigate ongoing electricity costs for as long as the solar energy system works.
